Here’s our short explanation of business connectivity options.

Business Broadband Connectivity Options

Broadband comes in 2 types: Standard and Fibre.

These services involve copper lines for data transmission. In terms of speed, both are faster for downloading data than uploading, and are contended, which means you’re sharing the connectivity with other businesses. As they are delivered over copper, actual speeds are distance dependent – i.e. the further you are from the exchange, the slower the actual speed.

Business broadband does not come with any service level agreement (SLA), so if there is a fault it’s a best endeavours promise when it comes to fixing it.

Standard Broadband

Standard broadband uses 100% copper infrastructure to transmit data from exchange to business premises. It delivers a maximum download speed of 20MB and upload speed of 1MB.

Fibre Broadband

With fibre broadband, data is transmitted over a fibre infrastructure (between the exchange and road side cabinet), with copper used for the final leg of the journey (from road side cabinet to your business premises). This gives a maximum download speed of 100MB and upload speed of 20MB. Fibre speeds are typically 4x faster than standard broadband.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

Available in select areas this is pure fibre broadband (not using copper) delivered straight to your premises. FTTP provides a fibre optic connection all the way from the telephone exchange to your premises. This connection offers lightning speeds and improves the performance of your internet connection even further.

Leased Lines Connectivity Options

Leased lines are business grade products with a 1:1 fully uncontended service, meaning you’re not sharing your connection with another business. They come in 3 different types: Ethernet First Mile (EFM), Generic Ethernet Access (GEA) and Fibre Leased Line.

Generic Ethernet Access (GEA)

Generic Ethernet Access (GEA) is the best broadband product you can get, comprising fibre broadband with a service level upgrade and rooting, delivering up to 20MB of upload and download speeds. Actual speeds are distance dependent; the further you are away from the exchange the slower the actual speed.

Because part of the service is delivered over fibre, availability is postcode dependent. Generic Ethernet Access comes with a Service Level Agreement.

Ethernet First Mile (EFM)

With Ethernet First Mile (EFM), data is transmitted over copper lines with up to 4 lines being bonded together to boost speed. It provides the same upload and download speed (up to 30MB each way), which is distance dependent – i.e. the further you are away from the exchange the slower the actual speed.

Because the service is delivered over copper, it can be delivered in most parts of the UK. Ethernet First Mile comes with a Service Level Agreement.

Fibre Leased Line

This is a direct fibre connection between a business premises and the exchange. It provides the same upload and download speed (available in 2 options: 100MB and up to 1000MB).

Fibre leased lines come with a Service Level Agreement.
